Acts of Creative Survival No. 1: Secret Colors

The Act
Wear a piece of bright clothing under your regular clothes (i.e. rainbow or neon underwear, socks, undershirt).

The Details
Don’t tell anyone that you’re wearing them except the friend who is doing it with you, this way your colors become your own little secret.  This act is most effective if you wear non-descript colors on top of your piece of bright clothing.  If you normally stick to earth tones and black, perfect.  If you don’t, tone it down for a day so that the brightest thing you’re wearing is your secret color.

Throughout the day pay attention to how aware you are of your hidden garment.  You may spend all day thinking about it and wondering if anyone else can see it or you may forget about it as soon as you put it on only to be happily surprised when you see it again later.  Either way, take note of your reaction.

What’s the Point?
We’re starting off simple.  Wearing a bright piece of clothing that no one else can see is either like a guilty pleasure or a slight discomfort.  Either way it makes you highly aware of what you are wearing and whether other people notice.  For some people, what they wear is a creative outlet, a way to express themselves.  For others clothes are simply utilitarian.  But whatever role clothes play in your life, everyone wears them!

Creativity is about risks.  This act could be a small something to smile about, a rebellious act against the normal dress attire expected at work, or an uncomfortable change to your daily routine.  What it will be is a declaration that you are paying attention.

The Next Step
Once you’ve done the secret colors act you can go another step by wearing a piece of bright clothing that people can see.  Notice how this is different or similar to wearing a piece that people can’t see.  Who knows, maybe you’ll like it and start to wear bright colors even more!
