In times of crisis, when words fail and hearts threaten to stop, I turn to art to help me make sense of something that I simply don’t understand.
I found out about the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school while riding the bus back from teaching children art at a local hospital. The children I worked with were so glad to see someone who wasn’t there to talk about how sick they were, someone who came just to help them make something, and I was amazed to see how warmly the smiled as they did art while waiting for their next round of medication and tests.
My heart breaks for the children and teachers who were put in the hospital in Sandy Hook today, for those who listened and watched in terror, and for those who didn’t make it to the hospital. People come together in times of crisis, but we need to remember to stay together after the crisis too. Hold someone you love tonight, hold them close and think of the children and teachers of Sandy Hook.
