the idea: go to an open mic with another musician, spur of the moment decide to play together
Now, I know that for some other musicians this is a fairly regular thing. You see another musician, you play together, and there’s no other thought about it. But you have to understand, most of my musical life was as a classical pianist. Sporadically playing with other people wasn’t really part of it.
In the past two years I have been delving deeper and deeper into the folk guitar world, leaving behind twelve odd years of scales, Bach, and black and white keys. Even so, I have yet to learn how to get up on stage and just make music with someone else. I’m getting their vocally, but instrumentally I’m still a long way off.
Thankfully, the folk world is full of other musicians who can do this. One of whom is the lovely Kara Kulpa who got up on stage with me last night at the Bloc 11 open mic night. It was even recorded, thanks to me recording one of the other musicians. What goes around comes around, and sometimes it even happens quickly!
