While I was lying on the floor, listening to ilyAIMY, and outlining a series of orange drips in yellow I got distracted by the textures of my own paintings. I know that sounds a little strange, maybe egotistical, but the thing about my kind of abstract art is that only half of it is made from a conscious choice. I’m constantly surprised by the small details held within my paintings that I didn’t purposefully make. So here’s the next idea:
Take detailed, up close pictures of paintings in progress.
I’ve done it before, but always just to document, never with the idea that the photographs could be art in and of themselves. Now, my medium has never been photography. I’ve always enjoyed taking pictures and have gotten better simply through lots and lots of practice. For a while now I’ve been thinking about trying to get my photography skills up to scratch and this seems like the way to do it. A lot of photographers set up the scene they shoot or forever have their eyes peeled for the perfect occurrence. The thing about photographing my paintings is that through making art I set up the scene for the photograph.
I’d have to get a good camera first. My little red box from 2007 and my cellphone probably aren’t up to scratch, but then I’ll start.
