Idea No. 68: To Paint a Hat

the idea: paint a hat that I crocheted a long time ago

I am not a crocheter.  I also do not like to use patterns.  For these to reasons the two hats that I ever crocheted were perhaps big enough to fit a two year old.  Probably more like a baby doll.

And yet, though I crocheted these over five years ago, I’ve never been able to get rid of them.  Recently I stumbled across one of them again and realized that they would be perfect for a canvas, carrying on the idea from the knitted glove canvasses.  (Those are almost done, actually!)

This hat was the subject of a test for clear gesso which did not work as well as I would have liked.  I think I had to use too much gesso for it to stay completely clear so it became a filmy, semi-transparent white.  Rather than despair, I chose to perform another experiment: making the painting portion of a knitted canvas out of acrylic paint instead of oil paint.

I’ve only every used acrylic paint for projects like painting my guitar case, creating my Paintings with oil paint.  However, at a recent art critique someone suggested the use of acrylic paint because then I wouldn’t have to worry about the yarn disintegrating under the oil.  This suggestion actually put me in a bit of a rut for a while and so I didn’t work on my knitted canvasses at all.

But now I’m back!  With a crocheted painted hat at that!
