Idea No. 92: Trial and Sketch

the idea: sketch to find an illustration style for my book

I’ve been writing a lot recently, or at least trying to.  I’ve set my deadline as March 21st for a complete rough draft of my book so I have a lot to get done between now and then.

Tonight, however, was not a night for writing, so instead I tried to figure out the visual part of my book.

I have little snippets throughout the book about where I want to do a sketch/drawing and what I want it to be of, but as of yet I haven’t tried to tackle what it will actually look like.  This photo was the first sketch in what I’m sure will be a series of sketches as I try to figure out what exactly my book is going to look like.

Here’s the early and unedited excerpt from Don’t Make Art, Just Make Something that the drawing is based:

the artist’s obstacle

Personally, I struggle with pencils.

When it comes to writing down ideas, sure, I like to use one.  But I’ve never been the type of person who could sit down and sketch what’s right in front of them.

It was because of my lack of skill with a pencil that I, like many others, was convinced that I couldn’t be an artist.
