the idea: ask kids to create their dream playground
For the past two years I have spent almost all of my time teaching for the Museum of Fine Arts. Because of this, I have spent that time basing every lesson off of the museum’s collection. This is, actually, quite helpful. It gives you a place to start and a piece to reference. It isn’t constricting because there is just so much stuff in the museum.
But during my internship, I’m doing things a little differently. Instead of basing my projects off of an art piece, I am basing them off of a question. For example, today’s was: “If you could build your dream playground, what would be in it?” Questions like these give kids a sense of ownership and of choice, of having their ideas matter. It also makes some pretty cool art pieces.
