the idea: screen the Shining on 35 millimeter film
the ideator: the Brattle Theater
I’m not much of a movie aficionado. In fact, I’m not one at all. I mostly watch movies to fill in the time or to make noise in the background of my studio while I paint. But tonight I was brought along to see a movie that even I have heard about: The Shining.
It was being screened in Harvard Square at the Brattle Theater and a friend of a friend had a free pass. I texted my friend to see what she was up to tonight and she responded that they were going to see the Shining. Not exactly what you expect to hear when you ask that question!
Although I am not a fan of horror movies, or books, I figured that a movie made in 1980 couldn’t freak me out that badly. While I will admit to jumping at some of the screams, being raised with hair-raisingly detailed computer graphics has made me braver in the face of elevators full of red corn syrup. In fact, one of the most interesting parts of watching any old film now is thinking about how on earth they made it.
All in all, it was a great last minute idea and got me out of the house. I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out for men in bear costumes with their butts showing, though.
