the idea: photograph men in poses of feminine vulnerability.
the ideator: Nir Arieli
Nir Arieli, a military photographer turned portraitist, turns the subject of fine art on its head by photographing men in typical poses of feminine vulnerability in his series, “Men.” As an artist from a women’s college, I’ve talked a lot about male gaze and the amount of women subjects vs. women artists. (The Guerrilla Girls anyone?)
A lot of the work that has been done to find a place for women in the art world has been done, unsurprisingly by women. In his work, Nir Arieli shows a different approach. By redefining masculinity as well as femininity, we can push the art world to even further limits.
