I’ve heard people say that they don’t “get” fan art. “Why spend so much time making something unoriginal when you could be make your own work?”
What those people don’t understand is an idea I stole from Austin Kleon’s great book, Steal Like An Artist. Humans are incapable of a perfect copy. What that means is that every time you copy something you make mistakes, and in those mistakes you can find your own style.
These incredible images by Christopher Stoll are, undeniably, taken from other sources. However it’s in the way he puts them together, the spaces he fills in between the copies, that makes these pictures art.
And pretty cool art at that. I mean, I want to watch a movie about these characters. Don’t you?
