Idea No. 110: The Snow Mound

the idea: turn a pile of snow into a secret system of tunnels

As the (hopefully) last piles of snow continue to melt, I thought I would get in a few quick wintery ideas.  This one came to mind thanks to the countless mounds of snow I saw piled at the edge of parking lots through the last couple of snow storms.

When I was in late elementary school I lived in an apartment complex with my mother and in one part of the complex there was an area fenced off for snow.  After one particularly strong storm, I remember going out to find a mountain of pure white snow.  The picture I captured this year, of partially frozen, dirty chunks, is beautiful in it’s own way but does no justice to my childish memory.

I spent hours, a better part of a day in fact, tunneling through that snow mountain.  It was nearly twice as tall as I was so it was perfect for burrowing.  I made a tunnel straight across, even creating a secret storage room for snowballs in case of the inevitable attack.  I remember lying inside, packing snow balls, and marveling at the fact that the snow looked blue.

Now, as the end of a long and cold snow season draws to a close, it is easy to view snow as nothing more than a pain in the ass, but every onc ein a while I get a flash of my childish glee at all the possibilities and the ideas start to come.
