the idea: make a drawing with a student
Last week I was teaching a class where we were using oil pastels and as the children began to draw I started to doodle absentmindedly on the brown paper. At first it was just to show them how well oil pastels blend together, but as they started to be absorbed into their work I started to pay more attention to mine.
At one point I turned away from my drawing to help a student and when I turned back the girl sitting next to me was adding to it. At first I was a little put off, particularly since she was blending a bright orange pastel with what had been blue and purple. However, through the rest of the class we went back and forth adding to the drawing while she also continued to work on her own piece.
We ended up with a flower in the vase and I’d say both of us were more interested in that than the initial lesson.
