the idea: learn how to make a hand-bound journal with a letterpress cover
I am on the last legs of my journey creating my book, Don’t Make Art, Just Make Something, and am coming face to face with decisions about publishing and distribution that for the most part are an equal mixture of daunting and exciting. Today, however, was just exciting.
On one of my few Saturday’s off I went to Union Press from 10-4 to learn how to make a journal with my own letterpress cover. Eli, the owner of Union Press, suggested that I do this when I asked him if he would design the cover for my book.
Not only was it absolutely beautiful as I walked through Somerville this morning, but the day went quickly once I got to Union Press. I learned how to set type, pull a print, bind a journal in two ways, and walked away with two completed journals and four more printed covers. All in all, I’d say todays idea was a success and I’m all the more excited to be launching my book on June 1st!
