Idea No. 16: Portraits with Paintings (and other art)

Have you ever seen those pictures where a person is put next to a picture of their dog and it’s amazing how similar they are?

I want to make a series of portraits of people next to their artwork.

I doubt that the resemblance will be as uncanny as when a woman looks just like her dalmatian, but I always find it interesting to see what type of art people make and how you can guess.  The picture on this page is from my first art opening at the Arsenal Art Center where I was asked to stand next to my artwork so that a picture could be taken.  I started to think about how knowing who made the art changes what we think about the art.  Some artists would say that it’s better not to know so that the art can be judged completely on its on terms.  However, I find it interesting to know about the context of the painting.  Who made it, where they were, what other types of work they created.  Seeing portraits of artists making art is always interesting, but what could we gather from a simple photo.

I’m not talking famous artists here, because they are more well known.  I’m more interested in people who make art, or make things of any sort, even if other people haven’t seen them yet.  Starting artists, hobbyists, and the like.  If only I were a good photographer I would start to take these pictures.  Maybe I’ll have to find one to work with me…
