the idea: put together an event for artists to showcase their work and performers to get up on stage
ideator: from the Blue Hill BGCB
As tends to happen in the community art world, I was told about the Creativity and Art to Life (I think I’m getting the title right…) event yesterday and ended up heading over there today after work. I wasn’t at all sure what to expect, it was at the Blue Hill Boys and Girls Club from 4-7 on a Saturday. But, I was at the MFA anyway so I ended up heading down there.
What I found was just what you would hope: a group of artists had set up their work on tables along two walls, the third wall was dedicated to a table of food, and the front wall was actually a stage. The more I submerge myself in the art world the smaller it gets, as demonstrated by tonight. I was invited by the host Devin, a friend of mine from Lesley, and ran into people I know from working at the Chelsea Boys and Girls Club, recognized people from community arts events at the MFA, and met more people to fit into this ever-expanding web of artists/teachers/performers.
Unfortunately I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to perform myself, but there was no need since the stage was fully populated with a band, poets, guitar players, and singers. Kids were running around, juice was spilled on the floor, artists came strolling up to stage from the seats, it was exactly the kind of comfortable, creative event that should be happening all the time. But I heard that this was the start of an annual event, so maybe next year I’ll get the chance to go again and even bring some of my paintings or my guitar.
