Idea No. 168: Hieroglyphic Necklace

the idea: have kids write their name using hieroglyphs on thick black paper with white pencil, cut out, whole punch, and put on a string with beads to make into a necklace

This art lesson is actually a modification of one that I did in second grade.  For that class we met multiple times, rather than the one-offs that I usually teach, so we had time to learn in depth about hieroglyphs, write our names in cartouches, and then create necklaces.  The thing is, we didn’t draw out the symbols, we were actually given pendants for each letter in our name.  to this day, the necklace I created that spells “Miranda” in hieroglyphs hangs with my jewelry.

I, however, did not have access to the same pendants so I could not teach with them.  Thus the drawing and cutting.  But in the end, these necklaces turned out pretty well too.
