the idea: title an article about me and my book “Miranda Writes”
the ideator: Nick Cox
My name is one of those names that came about through a long story, not all of which I’ll type up here. But the kist of it is that my dad loved the name Miranda and my mom was afraid that if she named her daughter Miranda she’d get teased because of the Miranda Rights. Because of this, my older sister was named Mairead but when I came around my dad tried again and this time, due to a series of theatrical events, my mother relented. (There’s more of this story in my ThunderDream idea).
Apart from when I tell the full version of this story to people, I have never been made fun of for my name. In fact, this week was the first time that anyone even referenced the Miranda Rights in the same time as they referenced me. A few weeks ago, I was interviewed by Nick Cox for the Somerville Scout magazine and only today did I see the actual printed version. I would link to the article but the Somerville Scout is one of the last print-only magazines. As such, we’ll have to do with a picture and this quote:
“The new book – which Aisling, with typical disregard for the accepted way of doing things, self-published via Amazon at the beginning of June – is strikingly at odds with many common romantic notions about art. If you set out to make “art,” she writes, you will be paralyzed from the start – it’s only through many toilsome and unglamorous hours spent making something, making anything, that art eventually emerges.”
And, with a writer’s eye, Nick also became the first person to reference me and the Miranda Rights on the same page when he titled his article, “Miranda Writes.” I think it’s quite appropriate.
