the idea: create a project out of recycled materials where the only instructions are to build something
The Something City is a community art project that I came up with in collaboration with my book, Don’t Make Art, Just Make Something. It is the kind of project you can, and should, do anywhere. The simple list of materials comes down to scissors, duct tape, sharpies/markers, and recycling. With these supplies, participants are asked to build something and add it to the Something City.
But this isn’t just a one-time project. The Something City will travel from place to place, allowing people across the country to help “rebuild the world, one city at a time.” Each time the Something City is recreated it will have a new name, for example the first occurrence was Something City, Union Square. The long term plan is that as the city travels, I’ll create a virtual map with markers and pictures that document what we’ve made so far. That is, once I get a kind and invested technology person to help me with that.
For now, the Something City is preparing to be born for the second time, but for that you’ll have to check in tomorrow.
