Idea No. 209: TEK Robotic Mobilization Device

the idea: reinvent the wheelchair

the ideator: Matia Robotics

In the past year I have started working in the Artful Healing program at the Museum of Fine Arts.  During my visits to various local hospitals I have made art with children who have a variety of medical conditions.  From children who visibly aren’t ill, to those who can’t get out of a wheelchair.  While working with these kids, I’ve had to figure out how to make sure they can do the art projects, whatever their mobility.

The TEK Robotic Mobilization Device is an incredible new idea that would make doing art projects, among many other things, easier for people who can’t walk on their own.  It completely reverts the wheelchair idea, letting users enter from the back instead of throwing themselves in from the front, and allows them to be completely vertical or to bend down into a sitting position.

To get the whole idea of what this new invention makes possible you’ll have to watch the video, but because it allows users to stand, sit, and move around more easily it is not only physically beneficial, it allows users a higher level of independence.
