Idea No. 76: Drip Paintings

the idea: make paintings using squeeze bottles and gravity

I actually can’t take credit for this idea, it was thought of by someone else in the education department at the MFA, but seeing as I’ve already spent two full days teaching it and have two more to go I thought that I would include it.

As one of the activities for February Vacation Week at the MFA we are doing Free Moving Paintings inspired by Morris Louis.  Each child gets a square of unprimed canvas in a tin and then they get to drip onto the canvas and use gravity to make lines from the drips.

Of all the projects, I’m actually glad to be doing this one because it’s the most like my own work.  True, with the way my additive art style works I would be one of the kids who ends up with brown soup instead of a painting, but the process is similar.  It’s incredible to see so many kids so intrigued with the simple experimentation of moving paint around a canvas.
